From 2023, e-bikes in the city will become cheaper!

Starting January 1, 2023, people who want to ride a bicycle to work in Austin (the capital of Texas, USA) will be able to buy e-bikes at more attractive prices. Austin Energy will double consumer rebates on e-bikes and e-scooters, and anyone who qualifies can claim the rebate within 60 days of the date of purchase. After the City Council voted this summer to strengthen incentives for e-bikes, Austin Energy determined the amount of the rebate:
A $500-$999 e-bike can get $200 rebate.

One electric bike worth $1000 – $1999 can get $400 rebate.

One electric bike over $2,000 can get $600 rebate.

Low-income people who participate in the Austin Energy Assistance Program (CAP) can also receive larger rebates, up to $1,300 on an e-bike over $2,000. CAP applies to people whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level or who already receive some social assistance.

Austin's infrastructure is also well prepared for e-bikes. The Austin Transportation Department is committed to building a 400-mile network of connected bikes in the city, so that residents can feel safe enough to replace the gas pedal with a bicycle pedal. Austin's bike network is now halfway there, which is part of Austin's Climate Equity Plan and Vision Zero Plan. The overall mission of the Climate Equity Plan, adopted in 2021, is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040. Achieving this goal means that city dwellers need to reduce their use of fossil fuels to almost zero, mainly through the electrification of the transportation system.

Vision Zero, on the other hand, aims to reduce the number of injuries or deaths caused by car accidents to zero. Research shows that making people feel safe enough to swap their cars for e-bikes would be a crucial step towards achieving that goal. In June, the U.S. also announced the construction of a charging network of 500,000 EV chargers along federal highways and set a target date for 2030, a move away from fossil fuel dependence as a positive step toward addressing the larger global climate change problem.
